例) Apple の スミスです。; I'm Smith from Apple. この文は、助詞 の を使い Apple の (=名詞1 + の) が スミス(=名詞2) に情報を付加する構造になっている。名詞1 + の は位置も役割も形容詞と同じと考えれば分かり易い。非常にシンプルな文法構造だが、この 名詞1の名詞2 は便利でとても良く使われる。他の例として、私の本。前の 私の (=名詞1 + の) が後ろの本(=名詞2)に情報を付加しているので "my book" という意味が想定され、結果、私の = my となる (cf. 私のです。It is mine.) 。他には、Tomさんの本; Tom's book、パソコンの本；PC books, computer books、ピンクの本; pink books、等。では、友達 の Peter は、どういう意味か。"Peter's friend" と答える人が多いが、間違い。の = of と考えて、単純に置き換えるから起きる間違い。例えば、車の本 = book of cars をよく見ると、日本語 の と英語 of では前後の語順が逆！正解は "My friend Peter" ！どうして？ 友達 の Peter は、後ろの Peter に 友達 の という情報が付加されている。友達、誰の？ 実は「話し手の」つまり「私の」友達。前回述べたが、日本語には 話し手 = 主語 ＝ 私 というルールがある。Peter、誰？付加されている情報をみると、友達 → 私の友達。すなわち Peter は私の友達 、Peter is my friend なので "my friend Peter" という意味になる！「私の」が省略されているので慣れないとわかりにくいかもしれないが、「私の」を言わないのはごく普通。前回話したように日本語はとても非効率な言語なので、通常「私」も「私の」も いちいち 言わない。従って聞き手は「私(の)」を補って聞く必要がある。ご参考までに、Peter の友達 が "Peter's friend" になる。ピーターの (=名詞1 + の) が 友達(=名詞2) に情報を付加しているので、この場合は「友達」は自動的に「私の友達」とはならない。Peter の となる。「友達」、誰の？「Peter の」。だから "Peter's friend" という意味になる。結果、「私の」が "my, mine" となるのと同じように「Peter の 」は "Peter's" になる。ついでに、英語では 「友達」と言った時、"a friend" か "friends" か を問題とするが、日本語は通常、単複を考慮しない。恐らく、友達が「いる > 0」か「いない = 0」か、がポイントだから。ということは元来、日本語には「零」の概念が有り、単数か複数かが大事な英語には「零」の概念が無いということなのだろうか。

Ex) Apple no Smith desu. ; I'm Smith from Apple. This sentence has a structure in which "Apple no" (= Noun1 + no) adds information to Smith (= Noun 2) using particle no. "Noun1 + no" is easy to understand if you consider it to be the same as an adjective in both position and role. Although it has a very simple grammatical structure, "Noun1 no Noun2" is convenient and very often used. Another example is watashi no hon (watashi "I", hon "book"). The preceding watashi no (= Noun1 + no) adds information to the following hon (= Noun2), so the meaning "my book" is assumed, and as a result, watashi no = my (cf. Watashi no desu. " It is mine."). Other examples are: Tom-san no hon "Tom's book"/ pasokon no hon "PC books", "computer books"/ pinku no hon "pink books", etc. Then, what does "tomodachi no Peter" (tomodachi "friend") mean? Many learners answer "Peter's friend", but it's wrong. The mistake made by considering no as "of" and simply replacing no with "of". For example, if you look closely at kuruma no hon = book of cars (kuruma "car"), the Japanese word no and the English word "of" have the opposite word order. The correct answer is "my friend Peter"！Why? In this sentence, the information tomodachi ("friend”) is added to Peter at the back. A friend, whose? Actually, "the speaker's", that is, "my” friend. As I mentioned last time, there is a rule in Japanese that speaker = subject = I. Peter, who? Looking at the information added to Peter, Peter is tomodachi. Whose? The speaker's = my, that is, Peter is my friend, so it means "my friend Peter"! Since "my" is omitted, it may be difficult to understand unless you get used to it, but it is quite normal not to say "my". As I said last time, Japanese is a very inefficient language, so we usually don't say watashi or watashi no. Therefore, listeners need to supplement watashi or watashi no when listening. For reference, "Peter no tomodachi" means "Peter's friend". Peter no (= Noun1 + no) adds information to tomodachi (= Noun2). Consequently, in this case, tomodachi does not automatically become "my friend". It becomes Peter's. "Friend". Whose? Peter's. So, it means "Peter's friend". As a result, "Peter no" means "Peter's" in the same way that watashi no means "my, mine". Incidentally, in English, when referring to "friend", the question arises whether it is "a friend" or "friends", but Japanese usually does not consider the singular or plural. Probably because in Japanese, the point is whether the friend is "yes> 0" or "not = 0". Does that mean that Japanese originally has the concept of "zero" and English, where the singular or plural is important, does not originally have the concept of "zero"?　See you next time!
