「どういたしまして」と「こちらこそ」

「ありがとうございます」「すみません」と言われた時、何と返せば良いか。一番簡単なのは「いいえ」。短いが礼儀正しい。英語の "Don't mention it", "Not at all", "Never mind" でも否定語が使われている。最近では「いいえ」ではなく「はい」と答える日本人がいる。核家族化に伴い家庭内での敬語が消え、子供が育つ過程で敬語を学べなくなり、敬語が崩れてきているからかと。又、お礼に対して「どういたしまして」と言う学習者がよくいる。多くのテキストで「どういたしまして」は "You're welcome."と紹介されているからだろうが、実はごく限られた状況で使う言葉。「どういたしまして」は、自分が100％与え手で相手が100％受け手の時に、与え手が受け手のお礼の返答に使う言葉。例えば、転んでしまった人を助けた時とか、お婆さんの荷物を代わりに運んであげた時に、相手のお礼の言葉に対して返す言葉。その場合でも相手が目上の時は「どういたしまして」は使わず「いいえ」と言う。相手にご馳走した時にも使わない。上から目線となる。いずれの場合も「どういたしまして」は自分が100％与え手であることを暗示するから、簡単に使えない。ご馳走した場合は、自分も相手と食事のひと時を楽しんだのだから、相手のお礼に対して「こちらこそ」と言うのがお勧め (こちら: I, me, we, us、こそ: used to emphasize the preceding word、こちらこそ: it is I who should say so.)。「[いいえ、] こちらこそ。」しか言わないのは「ありがとう」「おはよう」と同じスタイルで、相手が目下なら可能。「ありがとうございました」と先に言われたら「こちらこそ、ありがとうございました。」と「こちらこそ」の後に言われた言葉を同じく繰り返すのが「こちらこそ」の丁寧で相手に敬意を表す使い方。「宜しくお願いします。」と言われたら「こちらこそ、宜しくお願いします。」と相手の言葉を繰り返して使う。相手が目下なら「こちらこそ」だけでもいい。「どういたしまして」と違って「こちらこそ」は使い易いので是非使って欲しい。ただし「こちらこそ」は、相手の感謝の気持ちに応える言葉。相手がまだ何も言っていないのに、先に「こちらこそ」と言ってしまわないように！

What should you say in reply when you are told "arigatou gozaimasu" or "sumimasen"? The simplest is "iie". Short but polite enough. The English words "Don't mention it", "Not at all", "Never mind" also use negative words. Nowadays, some Japanese say hai instead of iie.This is probably because honorifics have disappeared from homes with the shift to the nuclear family, and children are no longer able to learn honorifics in the process of growing up, and honorifics are collapsing.
Also, learners often say douitashimashite in response to a word of thanks.This is because douitashimashite is simply introduced in many textbooks as "You're welcome, don’t mention it, not at all, my pleasure" without any annotation.  However, douitashimashite is actually a word used in very limited situations. Douitashimashite is a word that you use to reply to the other's gratitude when you are the 100% giver and the other person is the 100% receiver of an action. For example, when you help a fallen person or carry an old lady's luggage, you can say douitashimashite in response to the other person's words of gratitude. Even in these cases, if the other person is a superior, do not use douitashimashite and say iie. You should also avoid using douitashimashite when you treat someone to a meal. Doitashimashite sounds like having a condescending attitude. In both cases, douitashimashite is probably because it implies that you are 100% on the giving side. When you treated the other person to a meal, you also enjoyed the meal with that person, so it is recommended to say kochira koso in response to the gratitude of that person.

koso:used to emphasize the preceding word.
kochira koso: it is I who should say so.
⇒ Kochira koso arigatou gozaimasu.: Thank you, too. /Thank YOU!/ I am the one who should be thanking you.

To only say "[Iie.] Kochira koso," is the same style as arigatou and ohayou. This is possible if you are a superior. If the other person says "Arigatou gozaimashita" first, you should repeat what the other person said after kochira koso like "Kochira koso  arigatou gozaimashita." This is a polite and respectful way to use kochira koso. When you are told "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu", repeat the same words as "Kochira koso yoroshiku onegaishimasu." If the person you are talking to is a junior, you can just say "[Iie.] Kochira koso." Unlike douitashimashite, kochira koso is easy to use, so I hope you will use it. However, kochira koso is a word that responds to the other person's words. Don't say kochira koso before the other person has said anything yet!
