 日本語は実はとても非効率な言語。例えば、英語なら"I love you." フランス語なら“Je t'aime." と短いが、日本語だと「わたし は あなた が すき。」と長くなる。そこで、相手に向かって「好き」とだけ言う。そこには、「話し手 = 主語 = 私」「聞き手 = あなた」という暗黙のルールがある。これは非常に大事な日本語のルール。日本語では基本的に「私」と言わずに省略する。自己紹介でもいちいち「私」と言わずに単に「田中です。日本人です。会社員です。」と言えばいい。このように日本語は効率を高める為に省略を多用する。学習者は「誰が、誰に、何を？」とよく聞いてくる。日本語に慣れないと、さっぱりわからないようだ。確かに、日本語に特徴的なこの省略は不明瞭さを生み、日本人の間でさえ誤解を生ずることがある。その上、日本語は言わば信号のような言語で、暗黙の了解がたくさんある。暗黙の了解のある意味を言外に持つ表現が少なくない。交通信号の青、黄、赤の意味を知っているように、学習者はその日本語表現の言外の意味を知っている必要がある。

Japanese is a very inefficient language. For example, in English it is "I love you." In French it is "Je t'aime." Both are short, but in Japanese it is "Wa ta shi wa a na ta ga su ki." Japanese is very long. Therefore, Japanese just say "su ki" to the other person. There is a very important rule: "The speaker" is the subject, that is, "I", and "the listener" is "you". In Japanese, "I" is basically omitted. So, when I introduce myself, I don't say watashi(: I), I simply say " Surname desu. Nihon-jin desu. Kaisha-in desu.": I am surname. I am Japanese. I am a company employee. In this way, Japanese makes heavy use of omissions to improve efficiency. Learners often ask, "Who does what to whom?” For those who are not familiar with Japanese, it seems that they do not understand "who, to whom, what". Indeed, this characteristic "omission" in Japanese creates ambiguity and it can be misleading even among Japanese people. In addition, Japanese is a language like a traffic light, there are many tacit understandings. There are many expressions that have an unspoken meaning with a tacit understanding. Just as you know the meaning of green, yellow, and red in traffic lights,you need to know the unspoken meaning of those Japanese expressions.
